Sport Injuries
Sports injuries are extremely common around the foot and ankle. They occur either acutely through an awkward fall, twist or direct blow; or chronically through over-use.
The commonest sporting injuries seen by Mr Shelain Patel are discussed.
1
Ankle sprains
Ankle sprains are common injuries that occur when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn, often due to a sudden twist or impact. Proper assessment and treatment are essential for effective recovery and to prevent further injury.
2
Achilles injuries
Achilles injuries are common among athletes and can range from mild tendinosis to complete tears. Through assessment is essential for recovery and to avoid future occurrences.
3
Ankle instability
Ankle instability is a common condition that can result from previous injuries or ligament damage, leading to a feeling of weakness. Rehabilitation and strengthening exercises are essential for preventing further injuries and improving overall stability, with surgery reserved from high risk or chronic cases.
4
Stress fractures
Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone that occur due to repetitive force or overuse, commonly seen in athletes and active individuals. Early diagnosis and appropriate rest are crucial for effective recovery and prevention of further injury.
5
Running injuries
Running injuries are common among athletes and can often result from overuse or improper form. It's essential to listen to your body, rest when needed, and seek professional advice to prevent and manage these injuries effectively.
6
Tendon injuries
Tendon injuries can occur due to overuse, trauma, or age-related degeneration, often resulting in pain and limited mobility. Proper evaluation, and either rehabilitation or surgery are essential for effective recovery and to reduce the risk of future injuries.
7
Osteochondral lesions
Osteochondral lesions are injuries to the cartilage and underlying bone in a joint, often occurring in the ankle, or less commonly in the big toe. These lesions can lead to pain swelling, and impaired joint function, making timely diagnosis and treatment essential for optimal recovery.
8
Football injuries
Football injuries can have significant impacts on athletes, affecting their performance and overall well-being. It’s crucial for players to prioritize safety and follow proper training techniques to minimise the risk of injury on the field.
9
Sports surgery
Sports surgery is a specialised field focused on diagnosing and treating injuries related to athletic activities. With advanced techniques and technology, sports surgeons help athletes recover and return to their peak performance levels.
